Instead of severe punishment, Portuguese government give drug possessors therapy which is a group consisted of a psychologist, social worker and legal adviser. The effect of this policy is no bad, the number of addicts among all ages have apparently decreased.
Portuguese has the most liberal drug laws in Europe country. It is legal if you posses some amount of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. The residents of Portugal will feel a little guilty if they are sent to a official treatment by holding addict to drugs, so every data of disadvantages cause by drug abusing decrease for example rates of new HIV infections caused by sharing of dirty needles dropped.
In my opinion, I don’t really agree that drug possession could be legal, because I don’t really believe that people can discipline themselves. Even though many information show that the rate of addicts is decreased, I think is because it is just the beginning when the time goes by there will definitely have some serious problem be triggered by this new policy. However, the soft treatment instead of serious penalties may be a better way to make addicts recover from drugs nightmare. After all, people are animals which have emotion that you may use a proper way to treat them when there are wrong.
